In a world where the call for scientific innovation and environmental stewardship is increasingly critical, Timothy Cipriano, a dedicated researcher and educator, stands out as a beacon of inspiration for young Filipinos considering a career in science. His unconventional journey from aspiring broadcast journalist to esteemed STEM professional reveals the transformative power of passion and resilience.

Timothy’s early ambitions were far from the scientific realm; his childhood dreams revolved around becoming a broadcast journalist. “Okay, sa akin kasi, I did not really want to become a scientist at first. Ang gusto ko talagang gawin ay, I wanted to be a journalist,” he shares. His inspiration stemmed from a consistent exposure to news broadcasts, particularly TV Patrol, which ignited his passion for storytelling. However, a pivotal shift occurred during his high school years when he discovered a knack for tutoring his classmates.

“Fast forward nung high school ako… this is the time when I learned na baka pwede rin ako maging teacher,” he recalls. His decision to pivot away from journalism was significantly influenced by the violent realities facing journalists in the Philippines, notably the Maguindanao Massacre, leading him to pursue a career in education.

Upon entering college, Timothy’s love for geography blossomed, thanks to a cherished gift from his aunt—a geography almanac and atlas. “Mahal ko yung geography ever since I was 9 years old… kaya sabi ko kung gano’n, baka pwedeng maging career ko siya,” he reflects. His pursuit of knowledge took him to the Philippine Normal University and then to the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he majored in social sciences and later obtained a Master of Science in Geography.

“Du’n ko nalaman na napakalawak nung discipline ng geography… kaya medyo late bloomer ako sa STEM,” Timothy acknowledges, as he embraced the multifaceted nature of geography, combining social sciences with natural sciences.

Timothy’s journey hasn’t been without obstacles. As a contractual science worker, he faced numerous challenges, including unfavorable working conditions and delayed salaries. “There are a lot of conditions that are not favorable to science workers… delay ang sahod, and then aside pa doon, ay ang mga working conditions din not only they are working as science workers but also they are working with other jobs,” he explains. These systemic issues, he believes, are barriers that prevent aspiring scientists from pursuing their dreams.

Despite these hurdles, Timothy is determined to improve conditions for future scientists. “Kaya we are working very hard to make the system work for everybody… so that the next generation of scientists will no longer experience it,” he asserts, emphasizing the need for collective action among scientists to advocate for better working conditions.

Timothy’s advice for young Filipinos interested in STEM is both practical and profound. “Love what you do… and not only love what you do but be good at what you love to do,” he stresses. He encourages young scientists to actively engage in their communities, learning from those around them. “Mahalaga din yung community immersion… you get to understand what they need,” he notes, reinforcing the idea that science should serve the people.

He also underscores the importance of gratitude and responsibility: “Ako, I owe it to the people kasi binayaran ng taxpayers ang pag-aaral ko… this is my way of giving back to the people.” Timothy’s story exemplifies the essence of #AngIdolKongSTEM—a movement aimed at inspiring the youth to follow in the footsteps of scientists like him, who strive not only for personal achievement but also for the betterment of society.

As Timothy continues his research on flooding and environmental dynamics, his passion for geography and dedication to community engagement remain unwavering. “Dito ko lang nakita ‘yung ano, ‘yung sarili ko dito sa field na pinupursue ko ngayon,” he reflects, showcasing the joy of finding one’s niche in STEM.

In a world that often presents daunting challenges, Timothy Cipriano’s journey serves as a reminder that resilience, community, and a love for science can inspire the next generation to embrace their potential and contribute meaningfully to society. Through initiatives like #AngIdolKongSTEM, we can nurture a new wave of scientists ready to tackle the pressing issues of our time and drive positive change in the Philippines.
